On April 14, 2023, CMGT organized the 2023 Green Ramadan webinar with moderator President Mohammed Faheem and speakers Sr. Fizza from Baitul Ilm Academy, Sr. Sam and Anjum from MCC, and Sr. Djeneba from Masjid Al Farooq. The webinar was attended by 27 participants.
At the webinar, we discussed the motivation to reduce waste during Iftar Ramadan, the challenges, and strategies from different mosques. The speakers mentioned the food waste, water waste, plastic and styrofoam waste produced every night after iftar during the month of Ramadan.
The speakers highlighted the importance of education and campaign in our mosques and offered many great suggestions such as changes in serving the food and water using eco-friendly, compostable or reusabe plates, cups, utensils.
There are many interesting questions from attendees. For examples, Hafeez Mohammad from Muslim Community of Folsom asked, “What is the process of washing the reusable dinnerware?” Sara Hussin from Masjid Al-Asr in Virginia asked, “What do we do with food that is left behind in the evenings of Ramadan, both from kids who run off to play and leave food, and when cleaning up?” For more detailed discussion, please click the button below to view the recording of the webinar.
