The first CMGT Iftar Ramadan at Downtown Islamic Center was held on May 13-14, 2019. Nearly 275 people attended over the two nights. We are proud of everyone involved in making it successful, including our amazing volunteers who helped us prepare and wrap up the event.
We greatly appreciate our sponsors:
- Downtown Islamic Center for the venue, drinking water, snacks, and kitchen crews.
- Rawabi Grill and Baba Pita Restaurants for delicious iftar meals.
- Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum for eco-friendly food containers, cups, and wood sporks.
- Trader Joe’s for paper bags.
- Collective Resources for composting service.
We also thank our attendees who supported our “Zero Food Waste” challenge and helped us with the composting process.
At the end of the event, we diverted 45.7 pounds total of food waste, biodegradable food containers, cups, and utensils from the landfill.
We received great feedback from attendees on how to make our event more eco-friendly by avoiding the use of styrofoam, plastic water bottles, and to use less paper products.
We will gladly continue to learn from each other to improve our eco-friendly lifestyle and to promote the concept of Green Ramadan and Green Mosques by organizing family friendly programs for our faith-based and interfaith communities.
