CMGT hosted “Save Our Monarchs” event on November 9, 2019 and we are happy to hear great feedback from attendees including how much they learn about Monarch Butterfly, their habitat, and what we can do to save them from extinction.
We greatly appreciate our partners and sponsors who provided us with generous support in terms of the venue, delicious foods and refreshments, compostable food supplies, and composting service:
Downtown Islamic Center
Halal Peri Peri Chicken and Grill
Patel Brothers Grocery Market
Tahoora Sweet and Bakery
Whole Foods Market, Edgewater
C3 Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum
At the event, we really enjoyed the presentation, “The Rarest Habitat on Earth” by Homes4Monachs Founder and Director, Peter Gordan and the activity to prepare Milkweed seed packets.
We are also proud of our youths, Amal Bekkal as MC, Huda and Ameen who presented “Islam’s Approach to Nature”, and everyone involved in making the event successful including our Planning Committee members who prepared this event for a month and our amazing volunteers who helped set-up/clean-up the venue before and after the event.
During the event, we had other fun activities like Henna, Calligraphy, Islamic art and other products for sale like Argan Oil, Photography Session for fundraising. We also gave appreciation gifts to our youth speakers and raffle gifts to attendees.
At the end of the event, we collected total 8.2 lbs compostable waste (food scrap, wood utensils, and food/drink containers) which we diverted from the landfill with the help of composting service, Collective Resources and C3 Nature Museum.
We also separated and put 4.4 lbs of recyclable waste (carton and plastic juice bottles) to the Blue bin. The rest of waste, approximately 3.9 lbs of non-biodegradable waste ended up in the landfill. For the next event, we will try our best to produce less waste.
